Westport Senior ladies were away to a strong and well numbered UG squad this weekend, for round one of this year‘s new Division 1 league.

Despite rain pouring during the warmup, conditions turned bright and sunny, surprisingly warm day for rugby.

The Home side were quick to dominate, and were relentless in their persistence. Westport were a little bit slower to get going, but once they settled in, it was clear that they were comfortable and enjoying the game.

Unfortunately, at that point, UG had well sewn the seed of victory. Some injuries and an empty bench also didn’t help, but the women’s morale remained evident throughout. To finish a game with a losing score, but with smiles intact and even a few hugs for some of our ex players the opposing side; this is still a positive result and what rugby is all about.

We look forward to building and continuing in the league for the season! 💙
