In bitterly cold conditions at Westport RFC, the Westport U18 girls produced a superb performance to defeat Gort Monivea RFC 29–12 in today’s Connacht Cup semi-final (1:00 pm kick-off).
The match was played in extremely tough weather with two separate stoppages due to heavy hailstone showers, making handling and footing difficult for both sides. Despite the conditions, Westport showed excellent composure and attacking intent throughout.
Westport opened the scoring when Ciara Sheridan crossed the line for the first try of the game, giving the home side an early 7–0 lead. The hosts continued to press and were rewarded again when Orla Palasz finished a well-worked move to extend the advantage to 12–0.
Gort Monivea responded strongly and managed to break through the Westport defence to bring the score back to 12–7, but Westport quickly regained control. Orla struck again with her second try of the afternoon, pushing the score out to 19–7 and restoring momentum to the home side.
Westport’s forward pressure and quick ball movement continued to cause problems, and Ruth Conway powered over for another try to make it 26–7. Westport added further points with a penalty to move 29–7 ahead, putting the result firmly in their hands.
Gort Monivea showed determination to the end and managed a late try to narrow the score to 29–12, but Westport’s defence held firm in the closing minutes to secure a well-deserved victory and a place in the Connacht Cup final.
A standout performance came from Ceola Durkan, who was named Player of the Match after an outstanding display around the pitch, combining strong defence, multiple outstanding tackles and excellent work rate throughout the difficult conditions.
One of the most impressive aspects of the performance was how well the entire squad pulled together, particularly in such harsh conditions. Every player contributed, from strong carries and solid defence to tireless support play, showing the teamwork, resilience and spirit that has defined this group all season. The cohesion and determination across the full panel played a key role in securing the victory.
With the bitter cold, hail interruptions, and a determined opponent, it was a resilient and impressive performance from the Westport U18 girls, who now look forward to the Connacht Cup Final next Sunday 22nd March in Dexcom Stadium.
