Westport Senior Ladies welcomed Sligo RFC to Carrowholly, just as the rain was clearing and the sun began to make an appearance.
The first 20 minutes were a hard fought physical contest between the 2 sides, before Ursula Sammon made an impressive run in to get the home team first over the line, and right underneath the posts, making the conversion easy takings for Aine O Connor.
Sligo were spirited in their retaliation, and enjoyed a high percentage of possession, from which they reaped 2 tries and a conversion, taking the lead 7-12.
Westport bounced back firmly once they had the ball back in hand, and Saoirse Kelly orchestrated 2 tries before the end of the first half to bring Westport ahead before the whistle. Firstly she executed one of her classic interceptions only to offload to Aine O Connor to cross over the line in the corner, before scoring herself just before half time, with Aine converting again. We were ahead 19-12 going into the break.
Westport had a bit of a dip in the 2nd half, with a lack of possession visibly impacting momentum. Sligo took advantage, and scored 2 tries (1 converted) to bring them ahead to 24-19, in the closing minutes of the game.
In the final 10 minutes, Westport pulled some tremendous motivation and energy out of the woodwork, and ferociously dominated the visiting side as a whole team by pushing them back to their own line until a final try in the dying moments. A brilliant eye from the team captain and scrum half Muireann Cawley, and vice captain Ursula Sammon who both identified the space, led to a Laura Brady getting over the line in the wing to equalize the sides in the last play, bringing the game to the dramatic finish it deserved.
Thank you to Michael the ref, to all of the supporters, and to Lorna who always makes sure we have a good feed afterwards.
Congratulations to Leah Walsh on her Senior Women’s debut after coming up from Youths, and to Amber Hadden for her first ever debut on a rugby pitch!
