On a wild, rain-soaked evening that quickly turned into a full-on mud fest, the U18 ladies of Westport and Tuam/Oughterard served up a thrilling 24–24 draw under the lights in Westport. Despite the heavy conditions, both teams produced a gripping contest filled with determination, grit and a dramatic last-minute equaliser.
Westport started brightly and took control early on:
7–0 — Holly Burke powered over for the opening try after sustained pressure.
14–0 — Orla Palasz finished brilliantly to extend the lead.
19–5 — Clodagh McKenna added Westport’s third, giving the home side a strong platform at the break.
A huge part of Westport’s early dominance came from Ruth Conway, who not only slotted three superb conversions but also put in a massive defensive shift and carried strongly throughout the game.
In the second half, Tuam/Oughterard steadily worked their way back into the contest, building momentum and taking their chances to close the gap. Their pressure paid off as they edged ahead briefly, turning the game on its head.
With time nearly up and Westport trailing, the home side dug deep. Last-minute equaliser! — Aoibhinn Lyons crashed over in the dying moments to secure a dramatic 24–24 draw.
