Westport Under-14 girls continued their impressive run of form last Sunday with a hard-fought 28–24 win over Buccaneers in Westport.
Playing into a strong gale in the opening half, Westport showed real defensive grit as Buccaneers piled on the pressure. The visitors’ persistence eventually paid off with a well-executed kick-chase try, giving them an early lead.
But Westport settled, regained territory, and worked their way deep into the Buccaneers 22. Powerful carrying from the forwards set the platform, and Eva McManaman crashed over for her first try of the day. With the conversion added, Westport edged ahead 7–5 at half-time.
With the wind at their backs in the second half, Westport immediately took control. A well-worked team move released Clodagh Conway, who finished smartly to extend the lead. McManaman then struck twice more—completing a superb hat-trick—and she kept her composure from the tee, converting all four Westport tries.
Buccaneers refused to go away and showed great spirit, scoring two late tries to close the gap, but Westport stood firm to finish deserving 28–24 winners.
It was a thrilling contest, full of determination, skill, and teamwork—another memorable performance from a Westport side growing in confidence every week.
