The Westport Senior Ladies welcomed UG to Carrowholly on Sunday (with 2 former Westport RFC players in their group), for a highly anticipated game. The last few clashes between the two sides have been interesting to say the least, so it was difficult to predict the outcome before kick off.
The visitors put a lot of pressure on the home side inside their own 22 in the 1st quarter of the game, with Westport standing solid in defence. Eventually, their persistence paid off and UG were the first to score and convert.
It only took 3 minutes for full back Aine O Connor to find the space to get back over the line on the other side of the pitch, after an impressive chase from inside her own half, converted by Darwyn O Halloran. She nearly got a 2nd similar score shortly afterwards, however the last ditch UG defence thwarted her chance at what would have been a well deserved 2nd try.
Right before half time, UG found the corner and the score was 7-12 at the break.
15 minutes into the 2nd half, UG were awarded a penalty which went between the posts, and they scored one last try to seal the deal shortly before the end of the game. Final score, 7-20 to the visitors.
It was a brilliant and very physical performance from both sides, as it always is when these two teams meet.
Thank you to the ref, to UG for travelling, and to all of the supporters that came out on the day.
Congratulations and welcome to Rachel Moran who played her first game with the Senior Ladies squad, and also to Megin Pattinson who played her first ever game of rugby on Sunday. Both were great additions to the pack, we are delighted to have you for the rest of the season!
Best of luck to Kayla Conway, who has already jetted off to Canada after giving her all on the pitch for every game that she has played so far this season. Your jersey will be here for you when you get back!
