Saturday, 8th November, 12pm kick off in Ballinasloe RFC
Westport RFC may have left Ballinasloe empty-handed on Saturday afternoon, but their performance in a 26–19 defeat was full of heart, grit, and promise. Fielding a young, injury-hit side — and coming off a challenging previous season that saw them finish bottom of the league — Westport entered the contest as clear underdogs. Yet they pushed one of the league’s strongest teams to the limit, particularly during a ferocious second-half surge that nearly turned the game on its head.
For a spell, it looked as though Westport might pull off a remarkable comeback. Their determination and attacking flair began to unsettle Ballinasloe, and momentum was firmly shifting in their favour. However, injuries once again took their toll — two more players were forced off, leaving Westport to finish the match with just 13 on the field.
Both sides left the pitch battered but proud after a fiercely contested encounter that epitomised the spirit and physicality of Connacht club rugby. It was a gutsy effort from Westport, who refused to back down despite every setback, their second-half intensity and commitment reflecting the team’s growing belief and unity.
Despite the loss, there was an unmistakable sense of progress in the Westport camp. With a youthful squad showing maturity beyond their years, and the resilience to challenge a seasoned Ballinasloe outfit, the signs are promising for the season ahead.
The scoreboard didn’t tell the full story — Westport’s spirit, skill, and sheer fight proved they’re no easy mark for anyone this season.
